Gandhi Indian Cuisine is Riverside’s premier Indian restaurant.  It is rich in both culture and flavors. The recipes are based on Punjabi traditions honoring the owner’s mother and their life in Patiala India. The family has been here in Riverside for almost 20 years. The resulting experience is a world-class exotic meal prepared by your neighbor.

The name of the restaurant matches the owner’s philosophy: “Just do good and except nothing in return.” So the offering is of real food, made with care and respect to the ingredients. Details matter here. The linen table cloths are clean and crisp, the food is cooked to order, the bread is baked in a traditional clay oven. The food is a delight of the senses, spiced and aromatic; seasoned but not spicy. Of course, spicy is always an option if that is what you are after. The servers will ask you if you want heat, their traditional dishes are not usually spicy at all. They offer a lunch buffet from 11-3 daily. The entire buffet is created mild: no heat. There is a spicy-hot freshly made chili sauce available.

I started my meal with a mango lassi, a refreshing drink made with sweet mangos and yogurt. I ordered the Butter Chicken which is pieces of chicken cooked in a mild creamed butter sauce. I also chose the Aloo Goobi, composed of cauliflower and potatoes cooked with onion, garlic, ginger, and herbs. This was accompanied by the Jeera Wale Chawal, a dish of basmati rice prepared with cumin seeds and delicious butter.
No Indian meal is complete without fresh Garlic Naan bread. This is the best version of garlic bread you will ever try: baked fresh in a clay oven moments before you taste it. Their Aloo Goobi could easily be a vegetarian main course. This dish is rich, flavorful, complex, and filling. Veggies elevated up. If you are new to Indian food, these are the common ingredients to introduce yourself to the genre. The sauce on the chicken mixed with the rice was as gratifying as mashed potatoes and gravy.  This is great comfort food.

Gandhi Indian is conveniently located in the Mission Grove area of Riverside, on Alessandro Blvd. The space is perfect for large parties. You can dine in, take-out, or arrange catering. There is a kids menu, vegan, vegetarian, and meat lovers’ options available. Different dishes are offered at the buffet throughout lunch, and are changed out often. As an exciting new future, you can enjoy beer and wine. Look for them on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and if you are so inclined sign up for the email newsletter.

There is nothing I enjoy more than real-deal good food served by locals who care. Gandhi will not disappoint.
